Minecraft as Playground and Laboratory for AI

Spring Lane Building Lecture Theatre, SLB/118

Why games like Minecraft are the ideal test ground for developing collaborative AI

A long-term goal of artificial intelligence research is to develop artificial assistants (AI agents) that can collaborate with and empower their users, so-called collaborative AI. This goal raises important questions, such as how AI agents may understand a person’s goals, plans and beliefs in order to facilitate effective collaboration.

This talk focuses on Project Malmo, an AI experimentation platform that my team built on top of the popular video game Minecraft. Using this platform, I will motivate the challenges that arise from our goal of developing collaborative AI. I will discuss why video games are a particularly valuable environment in which to study and make progress on these challenges, and I will outline some of the emerging directions towards tackling these challenges.
